Our Story
In 2022, when the war in Ukraine began, I started volunteering in Antwerp to support refugees as they navigated the challenges of building a new life in Belgium. I helped with administration, housing, documents, and language support.
Together with a friend, we then united our forces in the creation of a Dutch Speaking Club (Refugees Hub), a welcoming community based in Antwerp.
What started as a small volunteer project has grown into a warm and supportive space where migrants, refugees, and local residents meet each week to speak Dutch and build meaningful connections.
Our Mission
Our mission goes far beyond language learning. We create opportunities for people from different cultures, generations, and backgrounds to meet one another as equals. Every session focuses on a different discussion topic, encouraging participants to exchange ideas, stories, and perspectives in a safe and respectful environment.
One of our recent discussions focused on the theme of happiness. Despite the diversity in the room, different countries, languages, religions, and life experiences, the same words kept returning: Family. Friends. Love. Peace.
These are the things that connect us all. These are the things that make us human.
The Dutch Speaking Club reminds us that meaningful connections begin when we look beyond labels and focus on our shared humanity.
Our Values
The Refugees Hub Antwerp (Dutch Speaking Club) aims to:
- Support the integration of refugees and newcomers in Belgium
- Create opportunities to practice Dutch in a relaxed and informal setting
- Build bridges between local residents and newcomers
- Foster inclusion, understanding, and social connection
- Create a safe and welcoming community where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued
We believe that strong communities are built through human connection, empathy, and dialogue. And we see it happen every week in our cozy Dutch Speaking Club in the heart of Antwerp.
